Dimmu Borgir return with a breathtaking live album! ‘Forces of the Northern Night’ contains two magnificent live spectacles: The acclaimed Oslo show, when the band performed with the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra and a grand backing choir, as well as their set from Wacken Open Air 2012, when band appeared on stage with nearly 100 people and created a spectacular combination of sounds with furious black metal and epic orchestral backing.

Faultless?

My only issue with this release is the setlist. Everything sounds and looks brilliant, as is expected. All musicians, metal, classical and choir are on top of thier game - in particular the use of choir to cover ICS Vortex's absent vocals works a treat. All songs sound better and fresher than the album versions, especially from the heavily represented Abrahadabra which I'm not fond of.
I would have liked a few more older songs and I do realise the band have moved on, but the did re-record Stormblast a few years back and a song or two would not have gone astray.
Dimmu still have passion for what they do and to evolve, and it shows through here.
